Being God’s Microphone

Each one of you has to be God’s microphone. Each one of you has to be a messenger, a prophet. The church will always exist as long as there is someone who has been baptized…Where is your baptism? You are baptized in your professions, in the fields of workers, in the market. Wherever there is someone who has been baptized, that is where the church is. There is a prophet there. Let us not hide the talent that God gave us on the day of our baptism and let us truly live the beauty and responsibility of being a prophetic people.

-St. Oscar Romero

Reflection:

This prayer felt like divine confirmation for some of the changes that have been happening in my life lately. I recently lost a family member and was thrust into leading our customary nine days of prayer. I had never done this before but had always found great comfort in this ritual, having lost my father a few years ago. The sense of consolation and community that praying together brought to the grieving process was always left me feeling so thankful for the gift of prayer.

What resonates the most from this prayer is the idea of being a microphone. Microphones amplify sound. In this same way, we must amplify God’s message to His people. We have an obligation to not remain quiet and not to keep for us the gifts God, in His providence, has given to each of us. Being a prophet means proclaiming the will of God. He’s already shared this with us through Sacred Scripture. We must proclaim this truth wherever we go, not only through our message but also through our practice. The gift of our baptism, like all great gifts, is not for us to keep. Our baptism should radiate out from us to shine over everyone we encounter.

Meditation:

Lord gives us the grace to loudly proclaim Your message of hope, love and faith through our works and words. Help us to amplify and exemplify love wherever we go, peace whenever we leave, and joy with whoever we meet.

St. Oscar Romero, pray for us.
