CCC 2567 God calls man first. Man may forget his Creator or hide far from his face; he may run after idols or accuse the deity of having abandoned him; yet the living and true God tirelessly calls each person to that mysterious encounter known as prayer. In prayer, the faithful God’s initiative of love always comes first; our own first step is always a response. As God gradually reveals himself and reveals man to himself, prayer appears as a reciprocal call, a covenant drama. Through words and actions, this drama engages the heart. It unfolds throughout the whole history of salvation.
Total surrender in prayer, in honest petition or worship, is powerful in that it allows us to fulfill the purpose for which we were created-union with God. Prayer, if done attentively, devotedly, and frankly, brings us into deeper communion with God. In this way, the creation contemplates its Creator. Turning our attention, our whole being to God, to the source of all that we are, gives Glory and Honor to Him that is the sole being worthy of such things.
When a baby stares are its mother, examining the curves of her face, seemingly trying to understand all that she is but not being equipped to, and finally is content in lovingly gazing at the marvel and wonder he is beholding. This is how we should approach God in prayer, with a baby’s loving gaze. Even though we lack the capacity to articulate in any outward means what we know to be true internally, we know that we are hers and she is our caretaker and that love binds us inextricably and forever. This is true of our Creator. His love and care for us know no limits and we cannot fathom its depth. But we can lovingly gaze at our Lord with the same marvel and wonder that a baby takes in its mother. With a deep sense of love and gratitude that we cannot articulate by worldly means, but that we sense in our spirit, we can respond to His call in prayer. Because this is where we feel God, at our very core. When we’ve gone the deepest and farthest we can go, we will always find God. Because He always is, has been, and will be imprinted on all He has created. We’ve been branded with His love, by His grace we are sustained. By His mercy, we are saved. He calls to us Him incessantly. We must respond in kind and we must do so in prayer until the day we can meet His gaze and share in His glory.
God is always calling out to us, and whatever he’s calling us for is more important than anything we’re working on for sure. Put down whatever you’re doing and answer the call. He might want to tell you He loves you. He might want to show His grace and mercy in a new way. He might want to reveal that will help you draw closer to Him. Don’t put this off. Answer immediately. Run if you must. But don’t make Him wait.
